The California Coastal Commission has signed off on plans to replace the Interstate 5 bridge over San Elijo Lagoon in Encinitas, regional transportation officials announced Tuesday.

The Coastal Commission during its March 9 meeting unanimously approved a coastal development permit for the bridge, as well as the initial plans for a new multi-use park and ride facility at Manchester Avenue and new bicycle and pedestrian trails in and around lagoon, according to a TransNet statement.

The projects are part of Phase 1 of the North Coast Corridor Program, with construction on the bridge expected to begin this fall, according to the statement. The new bridge will be wider to accommodate new carpool lanes and longer to improve lagoon tidal flow.

“This important milestone helps set the stage for implementing the first phase of transportation and environmental enhancements later this year,” officials stated. “This decision marks a key step in the 10-year collaborative effort between Caltrans, SANDAG, community members, local corridor cities, the Coastal Commission and resource agencies.”

Officials said public meetings will be held prior to the start of construction to inform residents and business about what to expect when work gets under way.
